Asymmetric happiness
COLUMBIA — Carol Bo Sun of Columbia died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at Saint Louis University Hospital of a rare genetic disease called Moyamoya. He was 18…StoryLink
This is my third obituary. I’m glad to see my improvement in writing obituaries, but at the same time, it’s sad to see another young person’s death. What’s sadder about this is that the disease was so critical, rare and has no cure, so even if he discovered that disease earlier, it would have been the same anyway. It’s a real tragedy. I hope he went to heaven.
HANNIBAL — “Smile” was the word that always came up when the Missouri wrestling team talked about one of its members, Phillip Perry, who died in a car accident Tuesday…..StroyLink
As a guy who has a younger brother who is close in age, I was pretty sorrowful while doing this story. I could sense what Perry’s brother is going through right now, not to mention what his parents are dealing with.
I also have friends whom I have known for more than 20 years. As I talked to his friends, I was able to see how much they loved him.
We had a similar tragedy last month in Oklahoma, I believe. I’m not certain whether texting caused these accidents, but given that driving while texting accidents have a really high death rate, I think it’s something that we should consider.
HANNIBAL — MU student Phillip Perry, a member of last year’s wrestling team, died in a car crash early Tuesday morning on Route 168, 2 miles west of Hannibal….StoryLink
It was a short article about the accident. I did the follow-up story on this because it was a Tiger wrestler. I’ll talk more about that in the next post.
COLUMBIA — More than 7,000 Missouri law enforcement officers’ personal information was released after the Missouri Sheriff’s Association was hacked by a group called AntiSec. A total of 73 Columbia officers’ personal information was leaked, according to the AntiSec website. The Missouri Sheriffs’ Association homepage has been down since last week….StoryLink
This hacking story was fun except that it was hard to find the local impact. I wondered how their members got arrested by FBI. I also wondered whether they truly have 10GB personal information…and I wish I were really skilled at computers so I could watch football match online without registering for a bunch of stuff.
COLUMBIA — Ken Henderson got his alligators back, and he promises to move them to Jackson County….StoryLink
So, here is my last saga of the alligators. Personally, I wanted to do some investigative reporting on Henderson’s institution as well as the man himself because as I said earlier, I thought he was trying to get some media attention, and to be honest, I could not 100 percent believe everything he said.
I could’ve done some investigation, and I did, in fact. However, I decided not to do a follow up story on that because I thought it wasn’t necessary.
Mr. Henderson still keeps calling me whenever he and his alligators are doing something. I don’t know if it was a right decision to write more articles on him, but when I saw his family in court and heard him saying he just wanted his alligators to be safe, I couldn’t help feeling some compassion
I think at that point, I knew if I did another story on him, I would have to dig really deep and discover everything that I could about him, which might portray him negatively. Anyway, he still calls me bumblebee and seems to love his animals.
COLUMBIA — The Lincoln University Alumni Association inducted Columbia centenarian Carl Connor into its Hall of Fame for his role in advancing education for black students in southern Missouri….StoryLink
First of all, I was moving out of my apartment when I was doing this story. But it was very touching to see Mr. Connor’s love for his students and education. Therefore, I have mixed feelings for this story. For example, when I recall the day, it seemed heartwarming and fatiguing at the same time.
